Bristol Fashion Weekend SS14: Overcoming Common Problem Areas

At Bristol Fashion Week this weekend, a really common problem that we came across is that many women are having trouble finding trousers and jeans that really fit well. Common issues were that they can fit in the legs but the waist would be too big and vice versa.

This is where we need to think like men and visit a tailor! Men get their suits and trousers tailored all the time and it's a great way to really get something to fit your shape, perhaps a blouse that you love that fits perfectly in the bust but is a little big around the waist and body can be taken in to create a really nicely fitting garment. Chances are you'll wear the item more than you do now, so essentially it's an investment into your own wardrobe!

Many people have the preconception that this is a really expensive option but taking up a pair of jeans or trousers normally costs around £10. This is a bargain to think that you'll have a near-on custom made pair of jeans.

Hopefully this helps! More to come on Friday about Bristol Fashion Week SS14!

3 Ways to Wear the Bomber Jacket Trend

The bomber jacket trend is really coming into style for spring and summer, it's really versatile and the perfect cool cover-up for the cooler hours. See below different ways to wear this trend. First up, the sporty floral look, this is a great casual look for the spring time with a sweater dress in stylish grey marl and a bright floral bomber in spring time colours paired with Converse to keep it casual. This bomber is from Scotch & Soda and is £90.
Next up we have a great relaxed weekend look featuring this lovely on trend pastel pink number from River Island which retails for £35. Keep the pastel trend going with some pastel desert Boots from Clarks but still cool as they're a different colour. Breton stripes and skinny jeans keep this look classic.

Now for a smarter look with this fab windowpane check bomber from Marks & Spencer which is £175 from the M&S Collection. This is such a versatile piece and could easily be worn with jeans, a white tee and converse for the weekend but we wanted to show a smarter way to wear the bomber jacket. Pair with slim cigarette pants and a collared blouse to ramp up the style factor at work. Pair with classic black courts for the ultimate power shoe.

Hopefully that's inspired you to try a different jacket this spring/summer and shown you that it really can be versatile! Remember that we're at Bristol Fashion Week at Cribbs Causeway from Thursday this week! Come and see us for free mini style consultations and discounts on full styling packages.

Candy Colours for SS14

Indulge in the sweet taste of candy this Spring as Pastels are making a return with lilac and aqua at the forefront. The soothing essence of the diluted purple spectrum and the varying tones of the turquoise family create a flirty, fun Spring vibe. Entwine the two shades into a floral print for a softer, easy to wear interpretation or add a stunning aqua colour to your nails.

Warmer skin tones can wear soft pastels avoiding direct contact (especially lilac) whereas cooler skin tones should opt for icy pastels to suit their complexion. Experiment with a selection of scarves to easily visualise if the colour suits your skin tone - an inexpensive way to freshen up your wardrobe instantly!!

Are you a huge fan of scrumptious pastel tones? Will you be indulging in the delightful (tasty) trend? We certainly LOVE candy here at The image Consulting Company, so we are in!!!  Take a look below to see how you can easily incorporate the taste of Spring into your wardrobe - excuse the pun!

How to Dress the Strawberry Body Shape

Today marks the end of the body shape series with the strawberry. Bristol Fashion Week at The Mall Cribbs Causeway is just one week away so take a look and pop along and see us for more information.

No need to fret if you have missed the  previous posts as links to other silhouettes are below:

Apple

Now, let's get back to the task in hand............

The Strawberry Definition

  • Wider shoulders
  • Smaller Hips
  • Slim Legs
  • Larger Bust
  • Creating an inverted triangle shape (strawberry)
If you have been following our body shape feature you will instantly know that strawberry shapes are required to balance their proportions by drawing attention to their bottom half. Adding volume, print and colour are techniques to ensure that the eye is led to the desired area. Full skirts with pleating are perfect to add that necessary volume and wearing pattern will demand attention. Team with simple tops and jackets that are slimline and avoid detailing and embellishments at the shoulders. This also applies to dresses that are well suited to the strawberry shape.

The primary focus is your slender legs. Don't be shy to wear bold coloured or striking patterned trousers to make your legs pop. Again add volume through pleating techniques around the waistband or a wide leg that fits snug around the bottom area.

Are you a strawberry body shape? If you need more advice please don't hesitate to get in touch for a personal styling session or wardrobe consultation.

How to Dress the Apple Body Shape

So, we are nearly there with our mission to guide our lovely ladies on how to feel condfident with their body shape. Today's, focus is the apple!

The Apple Shape Definition:

  • Holds more weight around the stomach area.
  • Has an undefined waist.
  • Typically, has a larger bust.
  • Usually has a good set of legs.
Apple body shapes should concentrate on drawing attention away from your widest part - the torso. Wear the correct bra to ensure that your bust is well supported and creates a definite divide. A well fitting bra will provide lift that a larger bust needs. Tunic dresses skim the stomach area nicely creating a smooth line. Wrap over dresses that have rouching/ pleating detail provide extra fabric, which disguises the extra weight nicely. A v-neck line, which are usually associated with these kind of frocks enhance the bust perfectly. Team with a structure blazer to give waist definition - tailored jackets usually have curved darts/seams in the back to provide an illusion of a smaller waist - clever I know!!

Avoid any pattern or detailing around the waist especially a belt as this will draw the eye to your middle. Instead wear tops with pattern neckline inserts or shoulder detailing to capture attention and inject interest to your outfit. The only exception being if the print covers the whole of the dress as the eye is not led to one particular place. Raise the waistline of your trouser higher to keep your stomach area slimmer and choose a more bootcut/flair style to balance out your proportions.

We know that is quite a lot of information to digest, so simply book in with a stylist today to provide expert advice on how to dress your unique body shape. We can even demostrate with your own wardrobe selection!! If you would like a free taster and 20% off your booking come and see us at Bristol Fashion Week at The Mall Cribbs Causeway.

As mentioned previously the wrap dress with the pleated feature is perfect for the apple shape. Take a peak below - we dare you!!!

How to Wear: Matching Sets/Co-Ords Trend

So this has been a trend that we've been loving here at The image Cons Co, it brings the power suit out of the eighties and into the now. This look really packs a fashion punch and is great for the up and coming Spring & Summer. Don't think it's just for model-type, we're about to tell you that you can wear this trend whatever your body shape.

The great thing about these matching sets or coordinates are that you get two pieces that you can mix and match with other things and one powerful outfit, so it's 3 in 1 with endless possibilities!

This amazing Zara suit is perfect for summer weddings or parties, or the office if you've got the best boss in the world! This is perfect for straight up and down girls or a slight curvy hourglass.
ZARA Yellow Suit
Don't be afraid of wearing a print if you are bigger in one place or another, wear it on your smallest area, your legs if you're top heavy and your top if you're pear shaped. This will balance you out and you're still able to wear the latest trends. Remember to keep the shapes, skirt lengths and necklines to what suits you and you'll be fine.

This stunning set from ASOS Curve is a great length to cover larger thighs if  you're conscious of them and shows off the slimmest part of your leg. These barely there sandals are also perfect for that as they are leg lengtheners! The side panels draws the eye downwards in a streamlined way to really slim you down. ASOS CURVE Geometric Set

This little co-ord suit set is amazing for shorter girls as the cropped jacket is a good length and won't swomp you if you're around 5ft 3. These shorts are also high waisted so they'll make your legs look really long. This isn't to say that taller ladies can't wear this, you totally can but it's just a great style for shorts girls too.

What do you think of this matching sets trend?

How to Dress the Pear Body Shape

Before you head out to start your Saturday shopping, take a look at how to dress for your body shape. We have already covered the rectangle and hourglass figure this week and today we are focusing on the pear silhouette.

The Pear Shape Definition

  • The widest part of your figure is below your waist.
  • Typically, your bust is on the smaller side.
  • Your shoulder frame is on the petite side.
  • Remind yourself of the shape of the pear fruit.

Pear shapes need to create a balance within their figure by drawing the attention to your torso and away from your hips and thighs. Wear darker shades on the lower part of your body to create a slim line. Straight and flared leg trousers create full volume from your hips drawing the eye away from your mid-section. Knee length or maxi skirts are perfect for pear shapes as shorter styles force the eye to your widest part. Dresses that have detailing at the top, an elasticated waist and an a-line skirt are a great way of disguising your mid-section and enhancing your bust.

Opt for tops and blouses in bold colours and print to draw the eye upwards and balance your proportions. Also, choose tops that have detailing at the neckline and shoulder to create a strong frame and enhance your chest. Boat and scoop necklines are a great choice for widening your shoulders.  Layer your clothing to add visual interest - another clever technique to create a balanced figure.

Beyonce's weight regularly changes with her shape falling between an hourglass and a pear. However, she celebrates her curves and uses some great style techniques to help her do this. Take a look for yourself.

1. Although her gown has detailing at the widest part of her body, the striking necklace and strapless neckline draws the eye upwards. The clever panelled seams direct the eyes towards the bust or to her fabulous legs.

2. The plunging neckline certainly enhances her bust and the rouching at the shoulders adds volume. The rouching at the centre creates excess fabric to smooth over her mid-section and the knee length finish demands attention.

3. The bold white insert allows for the eye to linger at this section of the top and to the structured shoulder detailing. The black trousers are very slimming creating a natural balance.

As you know there are variations of each body shape. Get in touch for a more in depth calculation of your figure. Remember we are also at Bristol Fashion Week at The Mall Cribbs Causeway from Thursday 27th March - Sunday 30th March. We look forward to seeing you there.

The Friday's Girl's Picks: Lupita Nyong'o Style

Today's post is all about rising star Lupita Nyong'o. She's risen to fame after starring in Oscar hyped 12 Years a Slave but it's not her acting I'm interested in right now, it's her style. This girl gets it right every single time on the red carpet and she always looks fabulous. One thing I love about her is her use of colour to accentuate her gorgeous skin colour. She can wear anything and it makes her light up! She also knows her body shape through and through and always flatters it with her hemlines and skirt shapes. This is one little lady we all need to take note from!

How to Dress the Hourglass Body Shape

Our next body shape to tackle is the hourglass. If you missed out on our previous post on How to Dress the Rectangular Figure, click here or if you are unsure of what body shape category you fall under check below.

The Hourglass Shape Definition

  • The bust and hips usually measure the same.
  • A defined waist.
  • The above points create a desirable curvacious silhouette.

Dressing the hourglass shape appropriately is based around showcasing your smallest part - your narrow waist. Opt for structured, fitted pieces that create smooth lines and fit effortlessly. Be careful to avoid extra bulk and box shapes as this will add unwanted volume. Celebrate your curves and try dresses that have a built in waist through elastic or tailoring. Belted jackets/coats and blazers that finish just before your hips accentuate your curves. Choose simple v-neck tops or blouses as these enhance your bust and draw attention to your waist. Wearing the correct bra will provide the support and lift needed to ensure a balanced look.

Full and fitted skirts work well for the hourglass figure as both highlight your waist. A-line and circular styles nip in at the waist and pencil skirts hug your curves naturally. Opt for trousers with a slight flare to balance your proportions as slimmer styles can make you look top heavy on some occasions. Wear high-waisted trousers to again draw attention to your waist. Avoid too much detail at the hip such as pockets or embellishments (this also applies to the bust area).

Here at The image Consulting Company each figure is unique. Try out these simple guidelines to see what works best for you. If you would like more information please get in touch or pop along to see us at Bristol Fashion Week at The Mall Cribbs Causeway.

Perfect Spring Beauty

If there's any time of year to bring in the new, fresher colours it's Spring time! It's nearly here, we hope, so here's a few spring beauty buys to entice you into the warmer months.
We love
Kiko City Filter Sunscreen as a great base with loads of SPF in it to protect your skin, it also helps to block out all the grime from working all day, hence being called 'city skin' because it protects you from that if you're a busy working gal. A product that we love for giving you a little glow and highlighting those higher areas such as brow bones and the tops of cheeks is the Topshop Highligher in Gleam, a bronzey colour or Polish the whiter highlight. To add some colour into your spring makeup wardrobe why not try a bright lip, this Seventeen Stay Pout Lipstick in Make an Entrance lipstick will be an amazing addition to a spring/summer's day. For a pinky flush, this Nars Blusher in Love is the perfect pretty pink tea rose colour to bring some colour into your life. If you fancy a bold eye, why not try this season's eye colour of blue with this MAC Eyeshadow in Winkle. If an all over lid colour is too much for you, try dipping a damp eyeliner brush into it and just lining your top lid with it for some striking liner.

How to Dress the Rectangle Body Shape

With new trends and colours to contend with, we felt it was time to provide a refresh on how to dress for each body shape before hitting the shops. Use this guide whilst shopping to select the correct items for your particular silhouette. The rectangle is the first body shape on our agenda.

The Rectangle Body Shape Definition

  • Lack of curves within your silhouette.
  • Carry a neat bust size.
  • No defined waist.
  • A flat derriere tendence.
  • Hip size correlates to the shoulder width.

Rectangular body shapes should aim to create a more curvacious figure by adding volume and drawing attention to your waist. Opt for tailored trousers that fit your waist perfectly and use techniques to create more volume such as pleating.  Either choose an a-line skirt to cleverly add volume or wear a fitted pencil skirt to accentuate the curves that already exist.

Fitted coats with a built in (or added) waistband or tailored jackets/blazers that finish at the waist are ideal. Tops with detail around the bust will enhance your chest or slight pleats at the shoulder illude to a stronger frame. Some rectangular shapes can wear loose fitting tops if worn with a pair of skinny jeans, slim fit trousers or leggings to create balance.

Do you class yourself as a rectangle? If so, what are your fashion dilemmas?

Leave a comment below or pop to The Mall at Cribbs Causeway where our stylists will be offering free personal style advice tailored to you at Bristol Fashion Week.

Keira Knightley is a perfect example of the rectangular body shape. Take inspiration from how she dresses her silhouette to create more curves through clever style techniques.

Below are some examples of the styles rectangular body shapes should look out for.

The Gingham Trend for Straight Up & Down Body Shapes

Image Source & Links to Clothes

This Gingham trend is really coming in for Spring/Summer and here at The image Consulting Company we always like to share a new trend. Also one of our main mottos is dress for your shape so in this post all of these tops are for the straight up and down girls who don't have the biggest bust. Now sometimes these ladies can feel a bit down about the lack of size in this area because lovely things like wrap dresses need to be pinned to prevent gaping and it can be a bit of a nightmare. But the plus side is that you can wear pretty high necked tops like these and the prints work really well because they won't make you look bigger than you are. This can happen with bigger busts and busy prints can make you seem larger. The high necks are also a problem for making you seem bigger than you are for bigger busts as tops tend to hang off you like a table cloth. Luckily for smaller breasted gals these will flatter and look oh so cute this Spring/Summer.
If you do have a bigger bust and still want to go with this cute gingham trend, why not try a 50s style dress in this pretty print that will flatter curves or even a pair of gingham check trousers or leggings with a plain top if you're top heavy. This will bring more emphasis down to your smallest part, your legs.

Hope this was helpful!

Shades of Pink for SS14

The flirty, feminine colour PINK is set to be big this SS14. The shade this season connotes elegance and sophistication leaving the memories of Paris Hilton firmly behind.

Pink symbolises compassion, nurturing and love mixing (literally) the passion of red and purity of white. The romance and allure of the colour in question reflects a positive and inspiring aroma, which will translate to your attitude and mood.

Cooler skin tones can wear pink shades with confidence as the striking and colder elements of the colour work well. Warmer skin tones should stick to more rich pinks to enhance their complexion or wear the colour as an accessory or within a pattern to avoid direct contact.

Chanel, Burberry, Celine and Temperly all embrace the pink shade in varying tones from a subtle blush to a bright magenta. The colour is going to radiate through your wardrobe this Summer injecting a sense of happiness and contentment, which will allow for you to step out in confidence!! Great news!!!

Enjoy the selection of choices from the high street. Which will you choose?

The Friday Girl's Picks: The New Nautical

The nautical trend has always been a great one for summer, but this year it's less Yacht in the South of France with champagne, it's more fisherman jackets and fish and chips on the beach. This trend is more masculine than it ever has been before and I think it's great for those British stay-cations to Cornwall & Devon! Perfect. It's getting me excited for summer already. Check out some more nautical inspirations on our Pinterest board!

Beauty Tips: Contouring 101

To create those perfect cheekbones and that picture perfect look is all about the contouring. Here at TiCC towers, the search for summer cheekbones is well and truly on. Celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian are both big fans of this technique but that doesn't mean that it has to be scary! This look doesn't mean that you have to look as if you're off to the red carpet on a daily basis, it is simply a little bit of lift and cover here and there to create a more sculpted face! Contouring can really lift the face and make the skin appear younger and more lifted, celebrity make-up artist Charlotte Tilbury has some fantastic techniques on how to create a 10 minute face-lift just with make-up.

The trick is to use matte contouring products; a bronzer without any sparkle or shimmer in it about two shades darker than your normal bronzer and a matte highlighter or concealer. One of Charlotte Tilbury's favourite techniques is to add a small amount of matte bronzer to the end of your nose with a fluffy brush to lift it. Add a light high light down the centre and along your cupids bow for further contouring.
Contour with the dark, matte powder around your hairline, in an E shape along your cheekbones and then down onto your jawline. Highlight the highest points of the face, the tops of cheekbones, underneath the cheekbones and above your brow bone. You need your favourite bronzer and a blusher to finish off this look, swirl them together and apply to the apples of the cheeks and further towards the hairline.

Charlotte Tilbury's final tips are to fill in sparse eyebrows as they can frame your face and to  use a slight cat eye eyeliner flick to lift tired eyes.

The image Consulting Company's Contouring Favourites

The perfect tools for the job are Real Techniques brushes, they have the perfect foundation and contour application brushes in their core collections.
Sleek make-up do a fantastic contour kit and one of our favourite blushes is MAC in Warm Soul, it's the perfect complimentary blush for contouring.

Oscars 2014: Our Verdict

The highly prestigious award ceremony took place on Sunday evening with countless actresses and actors braving the red carpet.

Of course Lupita Nyong'o never fails to deliver in her beautiful powder blue Prada gown, Jennifer Lawrence stands out in her tomato red Dior dress (although the peplum has to go) and Amy Adams looks radiant in her simple navy frock. However, on this occasion the style award goes to the men of the moment.................Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto.

Straying far away from the traditional black tuxedo that many deem appropriate for such events; the Dallas Buyers Club stars recieved their much deserved awards in a cream suit jacket with black tailored trousers. Leto teams his with a crisp white shirt and deep red bow tie whilst McConaughey wears a black waistcoat with matching bow tie. It is a refreshing change that is welcomed here at The Image Consulting Company. The light colour is uplifting and soft and remains smart for the formal occasion. The use of black and red create contrast and balance perfectly!!

Matthew McConaughey in particular has become under the style radar since his change in direction from a serial heart throb in many romantic comedies to more serious, compelling roles that are Oscar worthy. Do you agree?

Browse through the Oscar outfits below and let us know your verdict!

Yellow in Spring/Summer 2014

Yellow is back for Spring/Summer 2014 in a big way.
Here are a few outfit inspiration ideas for you for the yellow trend. A lot of people get scared of the colour yellow thinking that it might wash them out or make them look jaundiced! This can happen, but it is easily avoided with the right shade of yellow.
Follow these tips if you're planning on wearing yellow near your face. You can wear whatever shade of yellow on your bottom half paired with a neutral on top for a stylish finish. For paler/cool skin tones
If you have a cool skin tone, which means that over silver and gold, silver flatters your skin more, you can wear lovely pale yellows. A deeper sunflower yellow could be a little bit too much on your skin and may be overpowering. This Warehouse top could work really well paired with jeans and some bright courts or pointed flats.

For deeper/tanned/warm skin tones
If you have a tan and gold/warm tones flatter your skin and make you look more radiant you can get away with brighter sunflower yellows which will make you look even more sunny!

For dark skin tonesIf you have gorgeous dark skin you're so lucky because you can wear pretty much every colour under the sun without it washing you out. This is a common thing that we see when we're out and about on the road at events like Bristol Fashion Week, women with fabulous dark skin and what are they wearing? Drab shades of brown and black that are just bringing their skin tones down into the dumps. If you're afraid of wearing colour, why not just introduce some colour to your wardrobe with a bright scarf, it's a low risk investment because you can pick them up really cheaply to see whether you like it or not!
HOMEWAREYellow is big in interiors at the moment too and here at The image Consulting Company we love interior design just as much as the latest fashion trends. Here are a few of our favourite interiors pieces guaranteed to brighten up your home!

SS14 Trend Watch: Optical Illusion

Optical illusion dresses are crowned the most flattering frock ever invented! A bold yet true statement!! The name itself suggests a kind of trickery to the eye, a magical spell or, maybe, in reality a very clever manipulation of fabric and pattern design.

The trend sneakily creates an illusion of a smaller frame by producing a new line that demands attention. The new silhouette is created by a panelled insert (that is lost on the eye) or an impressive print that almost initiates confusion that the naked eye can't process; leaving everyone believing that you are 100 times smaller than this morning!

Another clever technique is to incorporate transparent triangular inserts that all point to the centre. Let's face it, if someone is pointing we are all looking!! Once again everyone's secretly wondering how you managed to loose weight in one hour - shall we tell them it's the dress or a unknown mystery created by an optical illusion????

Take a look below at how to achieve the optical illusion trend and where to find a stunning dress from Topshop.
